May 21, 2025 | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. β Washington rallied with three runs over the final two innings but couldn't complete the comeback in the first game of the Big Ten Tournament, falling to Penn State 5-3 on Wednesday.
Β
With the loss, Washington is unable to advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament but is still scheduled to face No. 4 seed USC on Friday.
Β
The Huskies and the Nittany Lions were in a pitching duel for much of the game, as Max Banks turned in yet another six-inning performance. The Husky ace finished with five hits allowed and four earned runs while striking out seven batters.
Β
After allowing a one-out RBI single in the first, Banks went on to retire 14 straight batters without allowing a hit.
Β
Penn State would then score three runs in the sixth and add one in the seventh off Isaac Yeager, but the Huskies didn't count themselves out.
Β
In the eighth inning, AJ Guerrero launched a historic home run, his 42nd career long ball to put Washington on the board. The homer ties him with Kyle Conley (2006-09) and Ed Erickson (1997-00) for the most home runs in program history.
Β
Guerrero went on to record an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as well. The senior slugger batted in all three of Washington's runs in the game.
Β
His third RBI of the day moved him into second in program history with 168, just one shy of the record.
Β
Washington put the tying run on base following Guerrero's RBI, but the Huskies couldn't find the last two runs. The Diamond Dawgs ended the day with eight hits, two more than Penn State's six.
Β
Guerrero led the Huskies with four hits in his five at bats. Casen Taggart, Malakhi Knight, Trevor Kole, and Blake Wilson each had one hit.
Β
Josh Emanuels pitched the final two innings of the game, facing six batters and striking out four of them with no hits or runs allowed.
