Huskies Knock Off Badgers For Fifth Conference Win
April 06, 2025 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Washington earned its fifth Big Ten win today with a solid 4-1 victory over visiting Wisconsin at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies improved to 13-6 on the season, 5-4 in Big Ten play, and 10-1 overall at home.
Leading 3-1, the final three singles matches were all in third sets, with all three Huskies one game away from victory. It was senior Nedim Suko that got there first, finishing a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles over Tomas Zlatohlavek. Cesar Bouchelaghem had two match points at that moment at No. 1 singles, leading his third set, 5-3, and Soham Purohit had a 5-2 third set lead at No. 3 singles.
Washington has now won four of its past five conference matches and will head to Indiana and Purdue next weekend for two more tough challenges.
"Every team is tough out here, including us, so we need to be ready for battle and be willing to work," said Head Coach Rahim Esmail. "I was looking for us to come out with good energy and maintain that energy. I think we let up a lot on Friday in the doubles with our energy, and let the other team back into it, so today the goal was to get up and stay up. Don't let up and keep our energy high and keep simple things simple."
Washington took a 1-0 lead with a doubles point that came down to the wire. Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn cruised to a 6-1 win on the top court, but courts two and three each had momentum swings. Suko and Purohit were down 1-4 but came back on serve and eventually broke to clinch the point, 7-5, over Minasyan/Meszaros. Brett Pearson and Rohan Belday were in a tiebreak on court three at that moment, leading 4-1.
In singles, Wisconsin got the first point on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 from Sachiv Kumar over Belday. But the Huskies got a 6-4, 6-4 win from Ivan Sodan at No. 5 over Matthew Fullerton to retake the lead.
Zharyn then earned a tough 7-6 (5), 7-5 win at No. 2 singles over Patrik Meszaros that pushed it to 3-1.
"Dzianis closing out that first set like he did and closing out the second set was extremely important for us to get that point on the board and continue the momentum," said Esmail.
Suko then closed out the victory on court four, beating Bouchelaghem and Purohit to the finish line.
