STANFORD, Calif. – The outdoor season picked up speed for the Husky track squad today on day one of the two-day Stanford Invitational. Washington's throwers, jumpers, and distance runners saw their first action of the outdoor campaign, with eight new top-10 marks already entering into the records.
Distance Events
In her first race since taking sixth in the NCAA Indoor mile final, Chloe Foerster ran away and hid from the field in the top heat of the women's 1,500-meters. Foerster dominated, winning by nearly seven full seconds, as she lowered her PR to a time of 4:07.32, improving her No. 2 mark in school history. That is No. 4 in the NCAA so far this outdoor season.
Also in the top heat, Maggie Liebich ran 4:14.46 and Claire Yerby came through in 4:16.81. Stephanie Driscoll got her first official mark since joining the Dawgs, as she went 4:19.36.
On the men's side, Ronan McMahon-Staggs, Rhys Hammond, and Martin Barco all finished side by side in the top men's heat in the 3:41 range. McMahon-Staggs, sixth in the men's mile final to match Foerster, was fourth today in 3:41.13, Hammond ran a PR of 3:41.27, and Barco went 3:41.30. In an earlier heat, Kyle Reinheimer won his section in 3:43.21.
Mia Cochran and Julia David-Smith moved into the Husky top-10 list in the 5k. Cochran had a 17-second PR of 15:40.96, going to No. 7 in school history, and David-Smith went to No. 9 with a time of 15:44.39, a 13-second outdoor best. In the men's 5k, Ben MacMillan led the way in 14:08.25.
New to the steeplechase, redshirt freshman Isaac Briggs made a splash, going 8:52.06 for a very solid steeple debut.
The late night 10k's continued to provide drama. In the top men's race, Evan Jenkins went the distance in 28:11.13, and Tyrone Gorze clocked 28:24.49, each a couple seconds off their PRs. Jamar Distel powered to a PR of 28:29.82 to move up to fifth in school history. Acer Iverson ran his first 10k as a Dawg and went 28:39.14 to go to No. 8 in school history, and Leo Daschback took 15 seconds off his PR to run 28:39.77 for No. 9 all-time.
Throws Events
A few of UW's javelin throwers finally got to air things out for the first time today. Jack Olsen led the way with a best of 213-6, and Carson Olmstead made his Husky debut with a PR throw of 208-10.
Sprint Events
Danielle Hunter advanced to the 100-meters final, going 11.99 in the prelims. She was fourth in the 200m in 24.30.
Senior Matthew Wilkinson opened up in the 400m hurdles going 52.31, and freshman Bodi Ligons clocked a 52.50. Jonathan Frazier was a DNF. Freshman Mikayla Gardley ran her first 400m hurdles and finished in 1:02.69.
Jump Events
In the women's pole vault, NCAA Champs Hana and Amanda Moll had just a routine 1-2 finish today but no records were crushed. Hana made 14-8 today to take the win and Amanda was second at 14-4. Avril Wilson cleared 13-0 1/4.
Prestin Artis was third overall in the men's long jump invite with a best of 24-11 3/4, while Tim Luebbert had a wind-legal PR of 24-1, and Roman Hutchinson also went 23-8 3/4 for a collegiate best.
Multi-Event Athletes
Heptathlete Sofia Cosculluela made a promising official Husky debut, reaching two different UW top-10 lists in her first day. In the 100m hurdles, she was third overall in 13.76 to advance to Saturday's final. Then in the long jump, Cosculluela went 20-2 1/4 on her second attempt, becoming just the eighth Husky to go over the 20-foot mark, and the first since Lyndsey Lopes in 2021. She also ran 24.64 in the 200-meters.
Jami Schlueter was just off his 110m hurdles PR going 14.38. He also threw 133-3 in the discus.
Ava Washburn went 15.15 in the hurdles and 17-9 1/2 in the long jump. She also ran 26.15 for 200-meters.
