STANFORD, Calif. — The Washington beach volleyball team earned two wins at the Stanford Invitational over the weekend, defeating UC Davis and Santa Clara while falling to No. 9 California and No. 3 Stanford in a pair of MPSF conference matchups. The Huskies split their matches each day, taking on UC Davis and Cal on Friday before facing Santa Clara and the host Cardinal on Saturday.
Washington opened the tournament with a gritty 3-2 win over UC Davis. With the dual knotted at two apiece, Hannah Doyle and Alina Urzua sealed the victory on court five, posting a 21-19, 21-16 win. Katarina Pantovic and Lauren Wilcock dominated their matchup at No. 2, and Brooke Balue and Niki Egan rallied for a three-set win at No. 4.
Later that afternoon, the Huskies faced No. 9 California in their first MPSF matchup of the weekend, falling 0-5. Despite competitive stretches and a tight three-setter on court three, the Golden Bears came away with wins on all five courts.
Washington bounced back on Saturday morning with a commanding 5-0 sweep over Santa Clara. Four of the five victories came in straight sets, highlighted by a strong showing from Teila Allen and Jade Sadeiko on court one. Pantovic and L. Wilcock overcame a slow start to take theirs in three sets, while Emma Hohenauer and Sarah Wilcock pulled out a close battle at No. 4.
In the final match of the weekend, the Huskies faced No. 3 Stanford in another MPSF conference dual, ultimately falling 0-5. Hohenauer and S. Wilcock took the first set at No. 4 before the Cardinal stormed back, and Balue and Egan nearly forced a third set at No. 3 in a tight second set. Stanford closed out each flight to complete the sweep.
