
Beach Dawgs Battle Back For Day One Split At MPSFs

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Washington beach volleyball opened the MPSF Championship Tournament on Wednesday with a split, falling to nationally No. 5-ranked and tournament No. 3-seeded USC, 3-0, before responding with a 3-1 win over No. 7-seeded Oregon.
The Beach Dawgs opened the day against powerhouse USC, which clinched the dual with wins on courts two, four and one. Katarina Pantovic and Lauren Wilcock fell 13-21, 15-21 on court two, while Emma Hohenauer and Sarah Wilcock dropped a 11-21, 18-21 decision on court four. Teila Allen and Jade Sadeiko wrapped up the match with a 12-21, 18-21 loss on the top court. Following the tournament format of playing to decision, the remaining matches on courts three and five were left unfinished, with USC leading both.
Washington responded in the afternoon with a strong effort against Oregon. The Huskies struck first on court two as Pantovic and L. Wilcock earned a 22-20, 21-12 victory. Oregon answered with a win on court three to even the dual. From there, Washington pulled away. Hohenauer and S. Wilcock picked up a straight-set win on court four, and Hannah Doyle and Alina Urzua clinched the dual on court five with a 27-25, 21-18 win. Court one was unfinished, with Allen and Sadeiko leading 11-9 in the third set when play was concluded.
