WALNUT, Calif. – Starting off four days of UW Track action in Southern California, multi-event specialists Jami Schlueter and Sofia Cosculluela had strong first days of their two-day competitions at the Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer-Lodge Stadium. More Huskies will join the action on Thursday at Mt. SAC as well as at the Bryan Clay Invite in Azusa, Calif.
Schlueter, the senior from London, England, is looking to earn a second-straight trip to NCAA Outdoors in the decathlon and a third-straight NCAA bid overall, including this season's indoor championships in the heptathlon.
He started out on the right foot, getting a wind-legal PR in the 100-meters of 10.78 seconds. Schlueter then had a long jump best of 22-9 1/4 and he went 47-2 1/4 in the shot put. A determined effort in the high jump included three third-attempt makes on his way to clearing 6-3 1/2. In the final event of the day, Schlueter exactly matched his 400-meter PR with a time of 49.10. That added up to 4,049 points which is good for seventh-place overall, and fourth among current college athletes.
Cosculluela, the heptathlon national champion of Spain, had a strong first day that started with a season-best 100m hurdles time of 13.50. That moved her up to No. 5 in school history in the hurdles. She made 5-4 1/4 in the high jump and then threw 38-4 1/4 in the shot put. She closed with a 200-meters time of 24.13 that was just a tenth of a second off her lifetime best. Cosculluela earned 3,430 points heading into day two.
