Dawgs Fight In Third Set Battles, Fall To No. 18 Trojans
March 14, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 19 Washington women's tennis (9-2, 2-1 Big Ten) put up a fight every step of the way Friday afternoon, falling to No. 18 USC inside Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies fell in doubles action for just the second time this season, as the Trojans pulled away with the doubles point with wins on the top and third court.
Four singles courts were pulled to three sets for a match that lasted nearly four hours.
McKenna Koenig earned the first victory for the Dawgs against her former team, besting Immi Haddad 6-1, 6-3.
"I told the team before the match that no matter what happens, I'd be proud of them as long as they competed hard and had fun—and that's exactly what we did today." Koenig said. "Couldn't be prouder of this group."
Sophie Luescher picked up the next win for Washington, her 10th singles victory of her senior campaign, taking a two-setter 7-5, 6-3 over Maia Sung.
The Huskies kept the ball rolling with Alexia Jacobs winning on the third court over Southern California's Lily Fairclough in three sets, winning the final one in a tiebreak to put UW up 3-1.
The match was left to Erika Matsuda on court two, Carina Syrtveit on court six, and Reece Carter on the top court.
Matsuda brought 56th-ranked Emma Charney to three sets before ultimately falling 2-6 in her final set to bring USC within one.
No. 118 Jana Hossam tied things up 3-3 for the Trojans on court six. Syrtveit won her first set 7-5 before falling in a second set tiebreak and then 6-4 in her third.
Carter's match on the top court with 47th-ranked Grace Piper brought all the fire and all the fight, with neither player winning a set by more than two games.
Piper took the first set in a tiebreak before Carter bounced back for a 7-5 second set. The two were tied 5-5 before Piper took two more to clinch the match for USC, 4-3.
The Huskies will host No. 26 UCLA on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Nordstrom Tennis Center.
