SEATTLE- The Huskies won their first Big Ten match of the season today against No. 64 Penn State.
The Dawgs started the night out strong taking the doubles round. Wins from Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn as well as Brett Pearson and Rohan Belday helped them secure the round win. This gave them a 1-0 lead going into singles.
The first win of the singles round came from Ivan Sodan taking his match against Reiya Hattori, 6-3, 6-2. Nedim Suko then lost his match to Penn State's Marcus Schoeman in a tough fight, giving Penn State one point on the board. Washington's Zharyn quickly responded with a win, taking his match, 6-3, 7-5. Bouchelaghem fought back from behind in his match ultimately winning 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, clinching the win for the Dawgs.
With the rest of the match playing out, Belday and Soham Purohit also took their matches, resulting in a 6-1 final score.
"It was an exciting time entering the Big Ten with this being our first home match and the guys were excited about that. We just kind of took it like any other match we have this season. You know, that's a really tough team, a top 75 ranked program right now." Head coach Rahim Esmail said, "We knew we were going to have to be ready to compete today and to battle and it was a tough match."
Next up, the Huskies will take on No. 4 Ohio State at home on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
