Husky Hoops Drops Heartbreaker To UCLA, 82-80 In B1G Opener

SEATTLE (AP) – Washington men's basketball was down 16 with less than five minutes to play Wednesday night and almost pulled off the comeback, ultimately falling to UCLA 82-80 inside Alaska Airlines Arena in the Big Ten home opener.
Down 76-60 with 4:45 left, the Huskies went on a 17-2 run, closing within 78-77 on Quimari Peterson's 3-pointer with 36.7 seconds to go. UCLA was fouled on a three-point attempt at 14.5 seconds and pushed the lead back to 81-77, but Zoom Diallo answered with a three-point play with 8.7 remaining.
Hannes Steinbach had a career-high 29 points on 11-of-12 shooting and 10 rebounds for Washington (5-3). Diallo added 19 points and Peterson and Wesley Yates III each had 12.
Steinbach had 16 points in the second half, nine in the run to put the Huskies back in the game.
Washington plays at No. 24 USC on Saturday, Dec. 6 for its first B1G road matchup. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
