SEATTLE – Washington sophomore goalkeeper Tanner Ijams has been named TopDrawerSoccer's National Player of the Week after her heroic efforts in goal helped lead the Huskies to the Big Ten Tournament Championship and the league double on Sunday.
Facing an onslaught from one of the nation's premier offenses in No. 9 Michigan State, Ijams posted a career-high six saves during the Big Ten Championship Game on Sunday, including several crucial, match-saving stops in the second half and overtime.
Then, the Topanga, California, native put her team on her back when the match extended into a penalty kick shootout.
Ijams saved 2-of-3 attempts from the Spartans, while the Huskies buried all four of their penalties to win the shootout and the conference tournament crown.
After Julia Hüsch's decisive kick clinched the win for UW, the Dawgs rushed to the middle of the pitch and mobbed Ijams, who later lifted the Big Ten Tournament Championship trophy high above her head with her teammates surrounding her.
On Monday, it was announced that Ijams and the Huskies will host the NCAA First Round at Husky Soccer Stadium. Washington, ranked No. 3 in the nation in TopDrawerSoccer's Top-25, will play Montana on Friday, Nov. 14. The match will kickoff at 7 p.m. PT, streaming on ESPN+.
