SEATTLE -- The second half of Big Ten play commences this week as the calendar also flips to the final month of the regular season. Washington Volleyball hosts a big rivalry match to close out October, looking to serve up nothing but tricks to the visiting Ducks on Halloween night, with first serve at 8 p.m. in Alaska Airlines Arena. Then, for the second week in a row, UW goes to L.A. for one Sunday showdown, visiting UCLA on Nov. 2 with a 2 p.m. start at Pauley Pavilion. Friday night's match will be live on Big Ten Network and Sunday will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
The Fright Night festivities on Friday include a Black Out for fans in attendance, plus tirck or treating with Husky men's and women's basketball players on the concourse giving out candy and basketball schedule posters.
The Huskies are looking to get back into the win column after a tough stretch of facing five ranked teams in six matches. The Dawgs had their best win of the season in the midst of that, defeating then-No. 17 Penn State in five sets, but they have lost the three matches since, all in four sets. Washington's RPI currently sits at 38, which would typically be NCAA tournament worthy, but the Dawgs must turn in a winning record down the stretch in order to end the year at or above .500, as last week's losses dropped the Huskies to 9-11 overall and 4-6 in conference.
Oregon is 13-7 overall and tied with the Huskies with a 4-6 mark in conference. The Dawgs earned a hard-fought road sweep in the first meeting just three weeks ago in Eugene, led by 12 kills from Kierstyn Barton and 11 from Simona Mateska. Last week the Ducks had a road upset over 25th-ranked UCLA in straight sets, then fell at home to No. 12 Wisconsin in four sets. For the season, UO is hitting .270 and holding opponents to .229, while in conference matches the Ducks are hitting .258 and allowing a .267 percentage. Also in Big Ten play, Alanah Clemente is sixth with 3.86 kills per set and her 24 aces lead the league. Valentina Vaulet also has 3.49 kills per set to rank 12th. Cora Taylor is 10th in assists per set with 9.78.
UCLA is one spot out of the rankings as the top "receiving votes" team. They are 12-8 overall and 6-4 in league play with quality wins over Minnesota and USC. Last week the Bruins lost at home to Oregon but then swept Maryland. In Big Ten matches, the Bruins are ninth with a .240 attack percentage and fourth in opponent attack percentage at .207. They are the top diging squad with 14.42 digs per set. Cheridyn Leverette is fifth in league play with 4.25 kills per set, hitting .263. Marianna Singletary is hitting .316 with 2.25 kills per set and she ranks fourth with 1.42 blocks per set. The match will pit the top-two liberos in terms of digs per set, as Lola Schumacher is posting 4.50 per set and UW's Zoria Heard is second with 4.00 per set. UCLA has won the past four meetings following a stretch where UW had won 15 of 18.
