No. 12 Badgers Push Past Huskies, 3-1
October 24, 2025 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – The Huskies couldn't spring the upset on 12th-ranked Wisconsin at Alaska Airlines Arena tonight, falling in four sets in front of 4,068 fans. Washington (9-10, 4-5 Big Ten) was led by freshman Simona Mateska's 13 kills but the Dawgs had a hard time delivering consistent offense in a 25-19, 19-25, 25-16, 25-20 victory for the Badgers (14-3, 7-2 Big Ten).
The Huskies had a slow start to the match and hit in the negatives in the opening set, but then quickly turned things around and found success in set two, hitting .267 and tying up the match heading into intermission. But Wisconsin's defense kept the Huskies in check in sets three and four, as UW hit just .161 in the third and .105 in the fourth. The final .108 mark was the lowest of the season for the Dawgs.
Head Coach Leslie Gabriel had to adjust the starting lineup as sophomore middle Julia Hunt was out with an injury, and junior Elise Hani stepped in, contributing three kills and tying for the team lead with four blocks. Freshman Maija Howse also saw her first extended playing time in just her second career match, and she recorded the first three kills of her career along with her first block.
"We got to run a 6-2 so it was good to see Maija out there," said Head Coach Leslie Gabriel. "She's someone that's been doing a good job in our gym, so I wanted to give her a shot to see what she could do. For a first outing I thought she did a good job."
Mateska had 13 kills and nine digs, leading the team in kills for the second match in a row. Kierstyn Barton and Alexa Markley both had eight kills apiece. Barton had a team-high 15 digs, a season's best. Zoria Heard added 13 digs.
"We did a better job with our serve and pass than last time out, so that's something I highlighted with our group because they put a ton of work in," "I was proud of how Simona played tonight, she's been working on being aggressive and I thought she went for it. But we had a hard time getting our offense going as a unit, both setters and hitters, just us working together.
Up Next: Washington faces a fourth-consecutive top-25 opponent on Sunday, back on the road, as UW visits Los Angeles for the first time this season to take on 22nd-ranked USC. That match will go at 12 noon on Sunday, Oct. 26, streaming only on Big Ten Plus.
