Women’s Tennis Announces 2025 Match Schedule
January 03, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The Washington women's tennis team has announced its match schedule for 2025, kicking off its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference.
Head Coach Robin Stephenson will enter her 11th season at the helm of the Huskies alongside second year assistant coaches Dani Melendez and Jennifer Kerr.
B1G THINGS ON THE HORIZON
Big Ten women's tennis now will feature 18 teams, with Washington, Oregon, UCLA, and USC joining the conference ahead of the 2024-25 school year.
Last season, Michigan led the way in league play, finishing a perfect 11-0 in conference and 29-4 overall. This included a run to the championship match and ultimately a 4-3 loss to Oklahoma State in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle last year.
The Wolverines won their third straight Big Ten Tournament title last season with a win over Ohio State before making a run to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, falling 4-1 to Pepperdine.
Michigan, Ohio State, Northwestern, and Wisconsin finished at the top of the conference last season, all boasting 19+ win seasons.
Four Big Ten teams finished last season in the top 15 of the final ITA rankings, including No. 5 Michigan, No. 9 UCLA, No. 13 USC, and No. 15 Ohio State.
WHAT'S TO COME
Washington will begin its 2025 competition schedule with a trip to Hawaii with a match against the University of Hawaii on Jan. 17.
ITA Kick-off Weekend will take place this year in Los Angeles for the Huskies alongside UCLA, Columbia, and Central Florida from Jan. 24-27 before UW hosts its first match inside Nordstrom Tennis Center against Portland on Jan. 29.
The Dawgs will play five non-conference matches before starting Big Ten play, including a trip across state to Gonzaga on Feb. 9, home matches against Washington State (Feb. 14) and Arizona State (Feb. 16), and a trip to southern California to play San Diego State (Feb. 22) and San Diego (Feb. 23).
Conference play starts on the road for Washington, as the Huskies will travel to Maryland and Rutgers for the first Big Ten road trip of the year.
They will host familiar foes USC and UCLA in their first conference home matches on March 14 and March 16, respectively.
Big Ten Championships will also take place in a familiar spot this season for UW – in Ojai, Calif. where the Dawgs competed at Pac-12s – from April 23 through April 26.
The full match schedule can be found here.
THAT WAS SO LAST YEAR
A few Dawgs are ranked in the ITA preseason poll in doubles play, including Reece Carter and Alexia Jacobs at No. 37 and Sophie Luescher and Erika Matsuda at No. 115.
In their first match as a doubles team at the ITA All-American Championships in fall 2024, Carter and Jacobs upset the top doubles team in the country, taking down Ange Oby Kajuru and Anastasiya Komar from Oklahoma State.
The OSU pair won the first set, 6-3 and had a 3-1 lead in the second set before Jacobs and Carter rallied back and saved a couple match points to force a tiebreak, which they won easily, 7-1. That forced another 10-point tiebreak, and again the Dawgs rolled through the breaker for the victory, 10-3.
In the singles rankings, freshman Carina Syrtveit sits at No. 104 and Carter is ranked No. 121.
OLD DAWGS, NEW TRICKS
Washington lost four members of the roster last year in graduating seniors Astrid Olsen, Melissa Sakar, Sarah-Maude Fortin, and Dariya Detkovskaya.
Four Huskies were awarded Pac-12 postseason honors in 2023-24, with Jacobs and Olsen selected to the all-conference Second Team and Matsuda and Sakar earning Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors.
With a lot of experience and high-level tennis leaving the team at the conclusion of last season, Stephenson brought in three players each with multiple years of collegiate tennis experience.
Joining the Norwegian first-year Syrtveit in their first spring season as Huskies are transfers Carter, McKenna Koenig, and Luescher.
Carter came to UW after two seasons at Arizona, Koenig after four seasons at USC, and Leuscher after three seasons at Oregon.
