Huskies Well Represented At 2024 World Rowing Under 23 Championships
August 27, 2024 | Men's Rowing
The Washington rowing team was well-represented once again at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships, which wrapped up last weekend in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada.
Four current Husky oarsmen and two women earned medals, while a total of 12 current and incoming UW men and women competed, along with men's assistant coach Sergio Espinoza (USA men's eight coach) and both Kristen Eaton and Ellen Parmley (Team USA medical staff).
On the men's side, Blake Vogel won the silver medal in the U.S. men's eight (coached by Espinoza), while Italian teammates Giuseppe Bellomo and Matteo Belgeri earned silver in the men's coxed four. In the men's coxless four, Ben Shortt of New Zealand was a bronze medalist.
In the women's events, Washington's Jordan Freer rowed in the three seat in the American coxed four, which rowed to the silver medal. Incoming UW freshman Violet Holbrow-Brooksbank earned a silver medal in the women's double sculls, rowing for Great Britain.
Another two members of the Washington women's team and five from the men's team competed at the Under 23 Worlds.
Cillian Mullen, who rowed in the Washington women's varsity eight all of last season, competed in the single sculls in St. Catharines, finishing third in the B final, good for ninth in the world. Cait Whittard, who rowed in the UW's second eight in the spring, was the bow seat in the Canadian eight, which finished seventh overall.
The Norwegian men's coxless four included two Husky oarsmen: Marius Bjørn-Hansen Ahlsand and Jonathan Wang-Norderud. Additionally, that crew was coached by current Husky coxswain Kieran Joyce. The Norwegian men finished second in the B final, good for eighth place overall.
Povilas Juskevicius of Lithuania reached the A final in the men's double sculls, finishing sixth in the world, while Quinn Hall and his USA quad finished third in the B final to earn ninth place overall.
Washington's student-athletes will continue to return to campus over the coming month, ahead of the fall academic quarter, when many of them will compete in various fall events, including the Head of the Charles (Oct. 18-20) and the Head of the Lake (Nov. 3).
