March 08, 2024 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Washington baseball team put the tying run on third in the eighth inning but couldn't complete their comeback Friday night against Stanford, dropping game one of the series to the Cardinal 3-2 at Husky Ballpark.
Jared Engman wore the loss but was effective through 5.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. Grant Cunningham finished the game, surrendering just two hits over 3.2 shutout frames, striking out six.
Stanford got on the board first in the third inning, with Ethan Hott singling, stealing second and coming home on Cort MacDonald's single up the middle.
The Cardinal capitalized on a dropped fly ball in the sixth, tacking on two to push their lead to 3-0.
Aiva Arquette, though, got one of those two runs back in the bottom half of the frame, hammering a solo shot 384 feet to left-center.
Jeter Ybarra pulled the Dawgs within a run in the eighth, slapping a single up the middle to score Cam Clayton, but the Huskies left the bases loaded to end the comeback bid.
Originally scheduled for 2:05 p.m. PT, Saturday's game two has been moved to 4:05 p.m to accomodate for forecasted weather in the Seattle area. The game will be broadcasted on Washington Live Stream 2.
