
Huskies Open Series With 6-5 Win

SEATTLE – No. 8 Washington took game one of the series, 6-5, against No. 14 UCLA on Friday night at Husky Softball Stadium. The Huskies improve to 21-4 and 5-2 in Pac-12 play on the season.
Ruby Meylan got the start and tossed three innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Sidne Peters (3-0) came on in relief to pick up her third win of the season with a pair of strikeouts.
Brooke Nelson entered with the bases loaded in the sixth. Lindsay Lopez earned her first save of the season after coming in with two outs in the seventh. The save moves Lopez into the Top 10 in career saves. She has four during her time as a Husky.
The Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 after the first, all runs coming with two outs. Rylee Holtorf led off the game with a four-pitch walk. Alana Johnson brought in Holtorf with her team-leading seventh home run of the season on the first pitch she saw. Four straight hits from Kinsey Fiedler, Olivia Johnson, Nelson and Sydney Stewart brought in two more runs.
UCLA cut the lead down to three on an RBI double by Thessa Malau'ulu in the second.
The game entered a 44 minute weather delay in the bottom of the second.
The Bruins continued to cut into the Washington lead with a two-run home run by Sharlize Palacios to make it a 4-3 ballgame after three.
The Huskies responded in the bottom half of the inning. Fiedler notched her second hit to leadoff and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from O. Johnson. Fiedler came around to score on a steal attempt and Bruin throwing error.
Washington added another run on a Fiedler home run in the fifth, her fifth of the season.
The Bruins were able to load the bases with no outs in the sixth, but Nelson and the Husky defense limited the damage to just one run to make it 6-4 game.
UCLA made things interesting in the seventh. With a runner on third, Jadelyn Allchin sent a sacrifice fly out to center to cut the Washington lead down to one. Following a Maya Brady single and walk to Sharlize Palacios put runners at the corners. Lopez was able to strikeout the Megan Grant to end the game a secure the series-opening victory for the Huskies.
