UW Wins Champ 8s, Champ 4s And Pairs At Head Of The Lake
November 03, 2024 | Women's Rowing
Washington crews finished in the top three spots in the Championship Women's Eight, Sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells Sunday at the 2024 Head of the Lake Regatta. UW crews also won the Collegiate Fours and the Collegiate Pairs events.
The Head of the Lake Regatta is a time-trial head race that runs from the south end of Lake Union, through Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut and ends in Lake Washington's Union Bay, near Conibear Shellhouse. Races were held in 41 categories for men's and women's college, juniors and masters crews.
In the top women's eights race, three UW entries took each of the top three spots in a field of six crews. The eight coxed by Isabel Michaelson and stroked by Megan Lee finished with a time of 16:14.172 to earn first place. The two other Husky crews finished about 16 and 17 seconds back, respectively.
In the JV Eight race, UW's fourth and fifth crews finished in third and fourth position, with Washington State and Gonzaga finishing in first and second place.
In the Women's Collegiate 3V8+ race, the Huskies entered three novice crews made up of all freshmen athletes. Those three finished in second, fourth and sixth place in a field of nine, with a crew from Washington State earning top honors.
"With three novice eights on the course, the energy and mindset of the squad going into today's racing was eager and focused," said UW novice coach Allie Lohrenz. "Racing at home is always special, and this weekend was no exception, with several of our walk-on athletes taking their very first racing strokes. I couldn't be more proud of the team's efforts today, and I'm excited to see how much speed this group will continue to build as we head into spring."
Washington won the Women's Collegiate 4+ event, racing to the finish in 18:57.858, nearly 90 seconds ahead of the second-place crew.
Many of the same rowers who competed in eights returned to the race course in pairs, as a total of 16 UW entries made up the entire field of the Women's Collegiate 2-. The pair of Olivia Hay and Shakira Mirfin took top honors, in 19:08.321, a little over 22 seconds ahead of Megan Lee and Sophie Houston in second. Evan Park and Jess Weir were third.
In the eights events with multiple UW women's entries, the crews were formed as equally as possible.
"The goal was to create the highest level of competition we could within each event—not only racing against other teams but pushing one another to go as fast as possible," said UW head coach Yasmin Farooq. "And then to get back out there and do it again in pairs, driving each other for every stroke of the race.
"I thought the racing and effort were excellent," Farooq continued. "Everyone had to dig deep and that's exactly how you want to end the fall season and set the tone for the spring."
"Today was an incredible way to wrap up fall racing for the whole team," said Hay, who also rowed in the Championship Eights event. "We have taken some quality strokes so far this year so the opportunity to put it all together and get to race our teammates and other programs is always rewarding! Rowing mixed lineups is a true test of the trust and adaptability our team has and the close racing creates a competitive environment that we experienced today.
"Shakira and I spoke before our pair race about being confidently relaxed and finding a new gear together," Hay continued. "We used our 15 other UW pairs to elevate us all."
The Head of the Lake was the final event of the fall season for the Huskies, who will next compete in March of 2025.
