Osobor Named MVP As UW Wins Acrisure Invitational Over Santa Clara
November 29, 2024 | Men's Basketball
PALM SPRING, Calif. (AP) - Great Osobor scored 19 points and Washington held off Santa Clara for a 76-69 victory on Friday in the championship game of the Acrisure Invitational.
Osobor, who was named the invitational's MVP, was 8-of-17 from the floor to go with eight rebounds and five assists. Zoom Diallo added 15 points and DJ Davis had 13 for the Huskies.
Washington (6-1) has beaten Santa Clara (3-5) in four straight and has its first five-game winning streak since 2019.
After a bit of a slow start, Washington used an 1-1 run to take a 20-14 lead at the midway point of the first quarter, and for the most part never looked back from there.
The Dawgs led 42-33 at the halftime break thanks in large part to 13 second chance points off of 10 offensive rebounds.
The Huskies never trailed from there, but a pesky Bronco side consistently clawed its way back in whenever UW was able to expand its advantage.
Up 13 with 2:41 to play, it looked like Washington would coast to the title. Instead, an 11-1 SCU run pulled the Broncos within three.
Up by a single bucket, Tyler Harris knocked down a pair of clutch free throws before Osobor's breakaway flush with one tick on the clock put the cherry on top of a 2-0 sweep in the desert.
Washington opens its Big Ten Conference slate at UCLA on Tuesday, battling the Bruins at 7:30 p.m. on FS1. Tony Castricone and Jason Hamilton will have the call on 93.3 KJR-FM.
