SEATTLE – One run stands between the Huskies and their goal of reaching the NCAA Championships. The second of the three championship races, the NCAA West Regionals will take the Huskies over to the eastern edge of the state in Colfax, Wash., where Washington will race for their spot on the starting line at nationals.
West Regionals goes off this Friday, Nov. 15, at Colfax Golf Club. The women's 6k race is set for 11 a.m. and the men's 10k starts at 12 p.m.
The top two teams at nine regional meets around the country on Friday earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, which are set for Nov. 23 in Wisconsin. After the 18 auto-qualifiers are determined, another 13 men's teams and 13 women's teams are chosen based on a point system that rewards head-to-head wins during the season over teams in the field for nationals.
NCAA Championship selections will be announced on Saturday, Nov. 16, on NCAA.com and over social media.
The Husky women's team comes into the meet ranked third nationally, and second in the region behind No. 2 Oregon. Oregon beat the Huskies for the Big Ten title two weeks ago in what essentially was a two-team race. Former Pac-12 rival Stanford checks in at No. 12 in the West. Gonzaga is ranked 21st, and Portland is receiving votes.
The Husky men are ranked a season-high 12th heading into the meet, coming off their runner-up run at Big Tens to match the women. Stanford leads the West Region men's rankings at No. 7 nationally, followed by the Huskies at 12 then Oregon at No. 15 and Cal Baptist at No. 16. Portland is 25th and Gonzaga is receiving votes, making for one of the deeper regions in the country.
Stepping up to the 10k for the first time this season, the men will bring a squad to Colfax featuring Leo Daschbach, Jamar Distel, Tyrone Gorze, Nathan Green, Rhys Hammond, Evan Jenkins, Ronan McMahon-Staggs, and Nathan Neil.
The women will take nine of which seven can start. The group features Ella Borsheim, Julia David-Smith, Chloe Foerster, Saskia Lloyd, Sophie O'Sullivan, Amina Maatoug, Maeve Stiles, India Weir, and Claire Yerby.
