June 02, 2023 | Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Huskies opened their Women's College World Series run with a 4-1 victory over Utah on Friday afternoon at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
Ruby Meylan got the start in the circle for the Huskies and tossed 3.1 innings with two hits and one run allowed with a strikeout. Lindsay Lopez picked up her 14th win after coming in relief with only one run allowed and two strikeouts.
After a scoreless frame for both teams to start, Utah brought across the first run of the contest on back-to-back doubles from the bottom of the order.
The Huskies answered right back. SilentRain Espinoza drew a four pitch two-out walk and Rylee Holtorf brought her across on the sophomore's fifth home run of the season.
Holtorf kept her hot bat going in the fourth with her third RBI of the day on a single up the middle to drive in pinch runner Avery Hobson from second for a 3-1 advantage.
Olivia Johnson tacked on another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to take a three-run lead. Lopez closed out the game by retiring the side to secure the 4-1 victory for the Huskies.
Washington moves on to the winner's bracket and will face the third-seed Florida State Seminoles on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT/6 p.m. CT. For all the latest tournament information, visit the tournament central page.
