30 SEASONS OF WASHINGTON SOFTBALL
2023 marks the 30th anniversary of Washington softball. The Huskies first year as a program was in 1993. Head coach Heather Tarr has been a part of 24 of 30 seasons in the Purple and Gold as a player, manager and coach.
THE LAST TIME OUT
The Huskies had a pair of non-conference matchups against Seattle U and Utah Valley and came away with two wins. Lindsay Lopez and Ruby Meylan combined for the one-hitter against Seattle U in UW's 3-0 win over the crosstown rival. Kelley Lynch picked up the win in the home regular season finale against Utah Valley in the 9-1 five inning victory over UVU on Sunday afternoon. Lynch also hit the game-ending home run in the fifth to secure the run-rule win.
SENIORS SHINED ON SENIOR DAY
Last Sunday, the seniors shined in the series finale against Utah. Baylee Klingler, Madison Huskey, Sami Reynolds, SilentRain Espinoza, Jadelyn Allchin and Brooke Nelson combined for all nine of Washington's hits. Kelley Lynch also picked up the save.
NOT ACTING LIKE FRESHMAN
The four freshmen have contributed a lot to the Husky program so far in 2023. Alana Johnson is fifth on the team with 20 RBI and third with seven home runs. Ruby Meylan is nationally ranked in shutouts (6), strikeouts (167) and saves (6). Brooklyn Carter is a force on the base paths, leading the team and second in the conference with 24 stolen bases. Sydney Stewart has split time at catcher with a .286 average and seven RBI.
RECORD WATCH
Baylee Klingler is one grand slam away from setting the program record in career grand slams. The fifth-year senior has five so far - four of which came last season and one this year against Hofstra. Ruby Meylan is one save away from tying the program record for saves in a single season with seven with Tia Bollinger (2002). She needs two more to have the feat on her own.
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
Stanford sits at 38-10 on the season and is 13-8 in conference play. River Mahler leads the team with a .408 average, while Aly Kaneshiro leads the Cardinal with six home runs and 32 RBI. The pitching staff is fifth nationally with a 1.53 ERA and freshman pitcher NiJaree Canady leads the nation with her 0.34 ERA and is coming off her third Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week and Freshman of the Week honor. Washington holds the record over Stanford 60-30. The record in a little close when the Huskies are in Stanford, with Washington holding the lead at 24-22 in Palo Alto. The Dawgs are on a four-game winning streak over the Cardinal.
INAUGURAL PAC-12 TOURNAMENT
Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium will serve as the host site for the inaugural Pac-12 Softball Tournament, which is set to make its debut from May 10-13, 2023. The four-day event will begin with a play-in game between the eighth and ninth-place teams in the regular-season standings on Wednesday. That winner will advance to an eight-team, single-elimination bracket with the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship being contested on the following three days. The winner of the Pac-12 Softball Tournament will receive the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Limited tickets are still available by visiting pac12.me/SBTix.
UCLA has clinched the No. 1 overall seed. The Huskies can be seeded anywhere between 2-5 depending on results following the weekend.
