Lin, Song Lead Huskies After Round One at Western Intercollegiate
April 10, 2023 | Men's Golf
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. β The Washington men's golf team returned to the Western Intercollegiate with a team of six Monday, and two Huskies finished in the top 20 among players. Washington's Taehoon Song and Teddy Lin completed round one with mirrored scores of 1-under par, in a tie for 18th place.
Β
"Teddy and Taehoon both played very steady today shooting rounds of 1-under," said UW assistant coach Emerson Newsome.
Β
As a group, the Huskies sit near the back of the standings, in a tie for 11th among the 14 teams attending. They face an uphill climb over the remaining two rounds of play, and hope to improve upon a modest start to the tournament.
Β
"We got off to a tough start today on a golf course that really amplifies mistakes," said Newsome. "The team did well to weather the slow start but the early hole we dug ourselves was challenging to overcome."
Β
Petr Hruby and Robert Galligan posted the next-best showings for the Huskies, finishing gritty outings to land in a tie for 52nd among the field.
Β
"Petr was very scrappy and managed to hang in the round despite not having his best stuff," Newsome said. "Robert, playing as our sixth man, was able to be a counting score in his first round in the starting lineup of the spring."
Β
Senior Bo Peng entered today's competition fresh off last week's third-place finish at The Goodwin tournament, his highest mark so far this season. After overcoming a slow start Monday, Peng finished strong with an even par, highlighted by four birdies and an eagle shot on the ninth hole.
Β
"Bo responded phenomenally after his first three holes of the day and should have momentum heading into tomorrow's second round," Newsome said.
Β
Joshua Koo's round one effort landed him in 63rd place, while Aidan O'Hagan, competing as an individual, finished in a tie for 75th overall.
Β
Round two tee times for the Huskies begin Tuesday afternoon at 12:22 p.m. PT.
