March 10, 2023 | Softball
SEATTLE – No. 10 Washington (18-4, 0-1 Pac-12) dropped its conference opener to No. 19 Oregon (17-4, 1-0 Pac-12) 8-6 on Friday night at Husky Softball Stadium.
Oregon jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first half inning, but the Huskies were able to respond right back. Baylee Klingler reached with a one out walk and Madison Huskey tied the contest with her eighth home run of the season. A batter later, Olivia Johnson sent her second homer down the left field line for the 3-2 advantage after one.
Rylee Holtorf added to the Washington lead with her first home run of the season to straight away center in the second inning.
After two scoreless innings, Oregon tied the game at four on a Vallery Wong two-run home run in the fifth.
In the seventh, the first two batter were able to reach for Oregon. With two outs, the Ducks scored four runs, all unearned, to take an 8-5 lead.
Down to the final three outs, the Huskies needed a rally with the top of the order due up. Sami Reynolds led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Klingler singled to put runners on the corners for Huskey who hit a single of her own to make it a two run game. However, Washington was not able to find the game-tying run to fall in game one of the three-game series.
Up next, the Huskies and Ducks face off for game two of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will air on Pac-12 Washington and Oregon.
