Huskies Travel To The Desert For Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

SEATTLE – No. 8 Washington continues its road stretch with a trip to Cathedral City, Calif. for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Feb. 23-25 at Big League Dreams. The Huskies will face a ranked team this weekend and play five total games, starting the tournament with a 9:30 a.m. game against Bethune-Cookman on Thursday.
Washington enters the week with a 9-2 record and are ranked in the Top 10 in all four polls. As a team, the Huskies are hitting .300 and averaging 6.9 runs per game. The Dawgs have recorded 30 extra base hits on the season with 15 double, three triples and 12 home runs.

30 SEASONS OF WASHINGTON SOFTBALL
2023 marks the 30th season of Washington softball. The Huskies first year as a program was in 1993. Head coach Heather Tarr has been a part of 24 of 30 seasons in the Purple and Gold as a player, manager and coach.
THE LAST TIME OUT
Washington had a 5-0 weekend at the Houston Classic with three run-rule victories over the five games and dropped a midweek matchup against McNeese on Monday 3-2. Sami Reynolds led the way with a .417 average with a pair of home runs and six RBI. Madison Huskey and Baylee Klingler also recorded two home runs with seven and 11 RBI respectively. As a team, the Huskies batted .314 over the six games.
The pitching staff posted a 1.56 ERA with two shutouts and two complete games. All four pitchers saw time with Ruby Meylan, Brooke Nelson and Lindsay Lopez and Kelley Lynch combining for 42 strikeouts, two complete games and three shutouts.
SCOUTING BETHUNE-COOKMAN
Washington and Bethune-Cookman have met once prior in 2020 at the Mary Nutter College Classic. The Huskies won the contest 8-1.
Bethune-Cookman is 1-8 during the 2023 season. The Wildcats are led offensively by Desirae Martinez with a .360 batting average with a home run. The pitching staff is led by Halyne Gonzalez with a 4.38 ERA in eight appearances and six starts.
SCOUTING KENTUCKY
The Huskies lead the all-time series vs. Kentucky 3-1. The last meeting between the two programs came in the 2019 Super Regional in Seattle - Washington advanced to the College World Series in two games.
Kentucky is 76-1-1 on the season. The Wildcats are led by Margaret Tobias with a .444 batting average, Erin Coffel leads the team with 13 RBI and five home runs. Alexia Lacatena leads the pitching staff with a 0.50 ERA and a 2-0 record. Stephanie Schoonover was named D1Softball National Pitcher of the Week after her performance last weekend at the North Texas Tournament. She has a 1.22 ERA on the season with 41 strikeouts and a 3-0 record and a save.
SCOUTING LONG BEACH STATE
Washington leads the all-time series against Long Beach State 11-3. The two teams met last season at the Puerto Vallarta College Classic - Washington won the game 8-3.
Long Beach State is 4-6 on the season. Sara Olson leads the team with a .343 average, while Makayla Medellin has two home runs. The pitching staff has a 4.7 ERA in 63.1 innings. Shannon Haddad leads the squad with a 2.96 ERA and a 3-1 record with three complete games.
SCOUTING UC SAN DIEGO
The game marks the first between the two programs.
UC San Diego is 6-5 early in the season. As a team, the Tritons are hitting .290 with Deena Pederson leading the way with a .474 average. Pederson has also hit three doubles, two triples and a home run. UC San Diego has two pitchers with an under 1.00 ERA in Gabby Williams (0.63) and Kaia Simpson (0.93). The duo has combined for over half of the innings pitched. As a team, the Tritons hold a 1.68 ERA with two complete games.

The Dawgs lead the all-time series 19-3 with San Diego State. SDSU won the previous meeting 7-5 at the Mary Nutter College Classic last season.
San Diego State is 8-2 on the season and receiving votes in both the NFCA and USA Softball polls. The two losses have come against ranked opponents in #22 Arizona State (L, 8-2) and #24 Oregon (L, 6-4). Jillian Delis leads the team with a .419 average and two home runs. Mac Barbara leads the squad with 11 RBI. Dani Martinez has a 0.86 ERA on the season with a 3-0 record in 16.1 innings pitched. The Aztecs have a 2.20 team ERA.
