SEATTLE – Nearing the end of the Husky Classic in the Dempsey, a couple Huskies ran a classic 800-meters, with Nathan Green breaking the 800-meter School Record with an assist from teammate Sam Ellis. Another big highlight came earlier in the day, as MaKayla Kelby extended her own School Record once again in the shot put.
The records capped off a productive weekend that saw Huskies putting themselves in improved positions for NCAA Indoor qualifications, or fine tuning before the final stretch towards nationals. Washington's No. 2-ranked men's team and No. 5-ranked women's team produced nine new top-10 marks this weekend, and racked up 11 event wins.
Kelby shifted her season up a notch today in the shot put. The fifth-year Husky had a season-best on her first attempt of 54-1 to set the tone. But her best came on her sixth and final throw, as she went 55-10 ½ and hopped out of the back of the ring in excitement. That added seven inches to her indoor record, and exactly equaled her outdoor PR. It also moves Kelby up to a tie for 18th nationally this season.

In the men's 800-meters, the final individual race of the weekend, two of Washington's eight sub-four milers from the previous home meet dropped down to test their speed at the shorter distance. It turned out to be solid.
Sam Ellis, the Princeton transfer who must compete unattached indoors, as he has only outdoor eligibility remaining, powered to the finish line in a winning time of 1:46.77. As an unattached athlete, Ellis is unable to set school records this indoor season, but Nathan Green certainly can. The second-year Husky, just a redshirt freshman indoors, was right behind Ellis in 1:46.99. The two celebrated with some shadow boxing.
Green officially becomes the first Husky to dip under 1:47.00 indoors, and breaks a record that lasted just two weeks, as Cass Elliott had lowered the record to 1:47.22 at the UW Invitational. Green now ranks 10th in the NCAA in the 800m and still third in the mile, and Elliott ranks 13th in the 800m.

The Huskies closed with a flourish on the women's side as well, as members of last weekend's DMR record-breakers continued to show their strength in individual events. Sophie O'Sullivan took the lead in the top heat of the women's mile with 200-meters to go and held it the whole way, winning and lowering her mile PR to 4:33.24, tying for the No. 5 time in school history.
A few minutes later, O'Sullivan's DMR teammates, Carley Thomas and Anna Gibson, went 1-2 in the top section of the 800-meters. Thomas won in a time of 2:03.68, and Gibson took second with a new personal-best of 2:04.47. That puts Gibson up to No. 3 in school history behind Thomas and Marlena Preigh, as the top three women's 800-meter times in UW history have been run this season, and six of the top seven.
Grin or grimace?? Maybe a little of both? ??

In the jumps, Washington picked up two more wins today, from Prestin Artis in the men's long jump, and freshman Avril Wilson in the women's pole vault.
Artis had another consistent series, winning at 24-10, just a few inches off his PR. Wilson and Sarah Ferguson each cleared 13-5 in the pole vault, and Wilson won a jump-off to take the win today. Ashleigh Helms and Holland Pilukas each made 12-11.
In the women's long jump, Lauren Heggen was second overall at 18-10 after winning the triple jump on Friday.
Back in the women's shot put, while Kelby set the record, it was also a good day for redshirt freshman Kaia Tupu-South and Ida Eikeng. Tupu-South went 53-0 on her final throw, just a quarter of an inch off her PR, to take second. Eikeng muscled a new indoor career-best of 46-10 ¼.
Eikeng had a third PR of the weekend as she capped off a busy two days by running the 800-meters in 2:25.61, building momentum for the pentathlon at nationals.
Daniel Gaik continues to hover just outside the Husky top-10 list in the men's 400-meter dash, as he took second overall in a time of 47.67. Anthony Smith ran 48.61 for fourth, and Sam Baricevic was fifth in 48.75, a big indoor PR.
In the women's sprints, the Dawgs had a couple runner-up finishes, as Danielle Hunter matched her PR in the 60-meter dash at 7.69 seconds, and freshman Anna Terrell lowered her season-best in the 400-meters to 56.21.
One final Dempsey Indoor meet remains in two weeks' time, as the Huskies will host the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite on Feb. 24-25.
