Three Huskies Go Sub-16 In 5k In Boston Opener
December 02, 2023 | Track & Field
BOSTON β A group of seven Huskies started the 2023-24 track and field season this afternoon in Boston at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. One of the big early season meets for distance running, coming just two weeks after the NCAA Cross Country Championships, the big story for the Huskies was three women breaking 16-minutes in the 5,000-meters.
Β
Only five Husky women had ever run sub-16 indoors in the 5k, and one of those five was in action today. Haley Herberg, the indoor School Record-holder, was back in the UW singlet for the first time since the fall of 2022. She made an excellent return with a time of 15:48.04.
Β
Two more women added their names to the UW top-10 list in their first runs around the track as Huskies. Kentucky transfer Perri Bockrath, in her Husky debut, went straight to No. 3 in school history with a time of 15:50.23. And India Weir, one of UW's top-five scorers during the recently finished cross country season, went to No. 7 in school history with a run of 15:55.53.
Β
Also today, Julia David-Smith ran the first indoor 3k of her career, and finished in 9:23.24. Samantha Friborg, competing unattached, ran the mile in 4:40.78.
Β
For the men, Ronan McMahon-Staggs had a season-opening 3,000-meters time of 8:09.85, and Eric Gibson ran the mile in a time of 4:11.91.
