Even Through Two, Stanford Takes It In Four
November 05, 2023 | Volleyball
STANFORD, Calif. – The Dawgs were dead even with fifth-ranked Stanford for two sets at Maples Pavilion, but the Cardinal pulled away in sets three and four to take the Pac-12 battle, 25-23, 23-25, 25-11, 25-19. Washington (14-11, 5-9 Pac-12) was led by senior May Pertofsky's 12 kills on a .345 attack percentage and got a double-double from freshman Kierstyn Barton with 10 kills and 13 digs.
In both meetings this year with the Pac-12 leading Cardinal, the Huskies took a set to sit at 1-1 going into the third, but UW was unable to go further in its upset bids.
Through two sets, points were 48-48, but Stanford stepped on the gas pedal in set three, hitting .593 as a team in that set, and following it up with a .389 mark in set four after the Husky defense had done well to slow the Cardinal with numerous touches at the net leading to easy digs and transition kills. Washington was out-digging Stanford after two sets, 41 to 37, but over the final two sets Stanford had 29 digs and UW had 20.
Pertofsky, back this week after missing most of the previous month, led the Dawgs in kills for the first time since Sept. 21 in the Pac-12 opener. She had her 12 kills on 29 swings with just two errors. Barton had 10 kills, hitting .281, with a season-high 13 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Madi Endsley had seven kills and hit .214, while Audra Wilmes had eight kills and three aces. Katy Wessels had four kills on five attempts out of the middle, and Elise Hani had three blocks.
Washington ran a 6-2 tonight, with Molly Wilson getting 17 assists and seven digs, and Kayce Litzau collecting 16 assists and nine digs. Lauren Bays added 13 digs and seven assists from her libero spot.
UP NEXT: Six matches are left with the Dawgs getting four of those six at home and needing to string some wins together. It starts at Alaska Airlines Arena next weekend as USC comes in on Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m.
