25th-Ranked Trojans Turn Back Huskies
November 10, 2023 | Volleyball
SEATTLE โ Husky volleyball dropped a straight set match at home tonight against the 25th-ranked Trojans. Despite getting a couple looks at set point in the third, the Dawgs couldn't get the one point they needed to potentially turn things around, dropping a 20-25, 14-25, 27-29 decision in front of 2,339 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena.
ย
The Huskies (14-12, 5-10 Pac-12) were led by senior May Pertofsky, who reached the 1,000 career kills plateau tonight. Most of those came in her four years at Michigan, but in her one season as a Husky, Pertofsky has been dynamic, and she played her third-straight strong match since coming back from an injury. Pertofsky shared the team lead with 10 kills tonight on 19 swings, hitting .474 with just one attack error, and adding two blocks.
ย
But Washington as a team could not keep pace with the Trojans (17-8, 11-4 Pac-12) who hit .331 for the match. UW hit well in sets one (.333) and three (.263) but in each frame the Trojans were a bit more efficient (.421 in one and .315 in three). Reigning National Player of the Week Skylar Fields led everyone with 22 kills, hitting .348.
The Huskies led for most of set three, trying to mount a comeback, and after USC made a push to reach match point first at 23-24, the Dawgsย earned themselves a trio of looks at set point on big kills from Madi Endsley, Katy Wessels, and Kierstyn Barton. But USC saved all three, and went back in front at 27-28, and completed the win with a kill on the next rally.
ย
Head Coach Leslie Gabriel says she thought USC "came out and played well. They passed better than maybe we anticipated. I need to watch our serving and see if we didn't serve hard enough, or did they just do a really good job? Then we had a tough time slowing down their offense. That's a space we need to continue to get better at as a program to win some of these matches."
ย
Madi Endsley equaled Pertofsky with 10 kills and had seven digs. Junior libero Lauren Bays did all she could with 18 digs in just three sets, as the Huskies led the Trojans in digs, 53-51. It's the first time this season that UW led its opponent in the digs column but did not win. Washington had been 9-0 when leading in digs.
ย
But USC had significant edges in total kills, 51-38, and in aces, 6-1, as well as blocks, 9.0-3.0.
ย
Audra Wilmes had seven kills and seven digs, Kierstyn Barton added five kills, and Katy Wessels had four with two block assists. Washington used a two-setter rotation, with Molly Wilson finishing with 18 assists and Kayce Litzau with 12.
ย
UP NEXT: Washington takes on UCLA this Sunday at 1 p.m. back inside Alaska Airlines Arena.
