SEATTLE – Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn have now made it farther than any previous Husky doubles duo at the ITA Fall National Championships, as the pair of juniors powered their way into the semifinals this afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. The Dawgs will look to play their way into the final on Saturday. Start time for the semis is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow.
The ITA Fall National Championships are the second of three national individual tournaments on the college tennis calendar. The event replaced the ITA National Indoor Championships in 2017. Just two years ago, Clement Chidekh made the singles semifinals; now the Dawgs have a doubles pair in the final four.
Bouchelaghem and Zharyn won an all-purple affair today, defeated TCU's Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted, 6-4, 6-1. Chan and Maxted were ranked 38th in the ITA fall preseason rankings, but they upset the No. 1 seeds in the first round this week.
The match was at 4-4 in the first set when UW held serve and then broke to win the first set. At 1-1 in the second, the Huskies won the final five games in a row, altogether winning eight of the final nine games. It's the third win in three days for the Dawgs.
In tomorrow's semi, UW will take on the No. 3 seeds in the tournament, and No. 2-ranked team nationally, Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon of Michigan State.
