Huskies, Manke, Tied For 10th After First Round At NCAA Regional
May 16, 2022 | Men's Golf
STOCKTON, Calif. โย The Washington men's golf team finished round one of the NCAA Stockton Regional in a tie for 10th place, needing to move up at least four spots over the remaining two rounds to advance to the national tournament.
ย
The No. 2-seeded Huskies finished their round with a team score of 3-over 291. Senior RJ Manke had the top round of the day among UW golfers, shooting a 2-under 70 to place himself in a tie for 10th on the individual leaderboard.
ย
The top-five finishing teams at the Stockton Regional will move on to the NCAA Championships May 25-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and despite sitting 10th, the Huskies' 3-over score places them just four strokes shy of fifth place (LSU and Liberty are tied for fifth at 1-under) after one round. Round two at The Reserve at Spanos Park tees off Tuesday morning, and the third round is Wednesday.
ย
"We will have to play two good rounds and get ourselves back to close to the lead," said head coach Alan Murray. "There's a good score out there on that golf course, but it's very windy and there are a couple of holes where, if you find the wrong spot, you'll be punished."
ย
Manke, the Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Year, was 1-over through his first nine holes, before making four birdies on the back nine. He bogied No. 18 to finish 2-under.ย
ย
Junior Petr Hruby carded three birdies and two bogies in his round to finish 1-under 71, good for a tie for 19th place overall.
ย
Pac-12 champion Noah Woolsey had a rough start to his round, with double bogies on each of the first two holes, but was 1-under the rest of the way to finish at 3-over par. Two other Huskies โ Teddy Lin and Taehoon Song โ were also 3-over, tying that trio for 55th on the individual leaderboard. Song was very close to finishing an excellent round before a triple-bogey on No. 17 and a double on No. 18 moved him from 2-under to 3-over.
ย
"Those are the breaks that golf gives you sometimes," Murray said. "We need to dust ourselves off and learn from it, and try to be better and a little more ruthless tomorrow. We will focus on tomorrow and be ready to go when the bell rings."
ย
The Huskies will tee off of hole #10, beginning at 8:55 a.m. PT Tuesday morning, playing with Nevada and Weber State.
