Dawgs Beat Gaels, Cardinal Take Second Match

STANFORD, Calif. – Washington Beach Volleyball opened up its four-match weekend with a win over Saint Mary's, but couldn't break through against 8th-ranked Stanford in its second match-up of the day.

The Beach Dawgs (11-16) took down the Gaels by a 4-1 count in the first match of the morning. The two and four pairs were on first, and UW got wins in both. Paloma Bowman and Scarlett Dahl had a 22-20, 21-13 win over Suarez/Laird. Then Hannah Yerex and Ashley Shook came back from a set down for a 14-21, 21-17, 15-12 win over A. Sundt and Harner.

No. 1 duo Natalie Robinson and Chloe Loreen won the clinching point, 21-19, 21-16, over Cowell/Christensen. A fourth point came via another comeback, as Kyra Petersen and Emma Calle dropped set one, 20-22, but one the next two, 21-15, 15-7, over E. Sundt/Bane.

Facing the Cardinal for the third time this season, the Huskies weren't yet able to break through. In the two and four matches, the Dawgs had a pair of 21-18 sets but that was as close as it got. Bowman and Dahl fell to Ekstrom/Kriz, 21-11, 21-18. Shook and Yerex were held off by Dailey/Harvey, 21-18, 21-13.

Loreen and Robinson had a rare struggle in their No. 1 match against Hodel/Reilly, falling 21-10, 21-13. Audra Wilmes and Olivia Mikkelen dropped a 21-15, 21-16 decision to Sharp/Wilson. Petersen and Calle took the first set at No. 5, 21-18, but Stanford's Morris/McKinney came back to win, 21-18, 15-9.

Washington will have a challenging double-header on Sunday as well, going up against No. 7 Grand Canyon at 9 a.m. and then No. 11 California at 3 p.m.
