April 16, 2022 | Track & Field
SEATTLE -- MaKayla Kelby found her rhythm in the discus today at the Beach Invitational, firing off the two best throws of her career to move up to 15th in the NCAA this season. Her mark was the big highlight of the final day of competition for the Huskies down in Southern California, ending four consecutive days of action.
Kelby set her new PR on her first throw of the competition today, throwing 185-1. She then went 184-4 on her third attempt, another mark farther than her old PR of 183-3. It improves Kelby's mark, which already ranked No. 2 in school history. Also in the women's discus, Beatrice Asomaning threw 167-4.
Kelby stepped into the ring again later in the day for the shot put, and placed fifth with a best of 52-feet, 4-inches.
On the men's side, Elijah Mason competed for the second time this week in the discus, and while he didn't quite match his opening mark of 186, he had three throws over the 180-foot mark today, including a best of 183-0.
Sam Van Peursem threw 55-2 3/4 in the men's shot put, finishing 16th overall.
