Huskies Hound Bruins, Taking Every Singles Set
April 01, 2022 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE โ The Huskies were firing on all six courts against the visiting UCLA Bruins today, and when UW does that, "we're very tough," according to Head Coach Matt Anger. Washington (14-5, 2-1 Pac-12) did not drop a single set in singles, earning a 5-1 victory at the Bill Quillian Stadium in UW's first outdoor home match of the season.
ย
It's Washington's first win over the Bruins since the 2006 season.
ย
"They're one of the storied programs obviously but in our conference a lot of the schools have great histories, so the only thing I'm really thinking about is we're 2-1 in the conference now," said Anger. "I want to enjoy this because it's always tough beating UCLA, but at the same time I want to get ready for USC on Sunday, and everybody knows that."
ย
Coming off a tough loss at Utah last Sunday to finish a 4-2 road stretch, the Huskies rebounded emphatically in their return home. But it was UCLA taking the 1-0 lead with a doubles point win. The Huskies got a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles from Ewen Lumsden and Cesar Bouchelaghem, but UCLA got late service breaks on courts one and two to go from 4-4 to matching 6-4 wins just moments apart.
ย
But UW came out with great focus in singles, jumping up early breaks in four courts to set the tone, and eventually taking all six first sets
ย
Fourth-ranked junior Clement Chidekh easily notched another big top-40 win at the No. 1 spot, as he defeated 38th-ranked Alexander Hoogmartens, 6-1, 6-2, for the first singles point.
ย
Ewen Lumsden then closed out a dominant second set for a 6-4, 6-0 win over Giacomo Revelli at No. 3 singles, and quickly after that followed another point at No. 6, as Nedim Suko finished a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stefan Leustian to make it 3-1 Dawgs.
ย
Jack Davis and Cesar Bouchelaghem both reached match point at the same time on courts two and five, respectively. Bouchelaghem got his win first, officially clinching with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Eric Hahn. Davis was mid-rally at match point against Patrick Zahraj and he eventually hammered an overhead smash to win, 6-3, 6-4.
ย
That left just Han-Chih Lin who was unable to finish on court four, but he was leading, 7-5, 3-2, against Karl Lee.
ย
The Dawgs have another big test up this Sunday, as 13th-ranked USC comes in for a 12 noon dual.
