RALEIGH, N.C. – Brian Fay's attack on the Husky school records continued in his first outdoor race tonight at the Raleigh Relays, as he and Kieran Lumb teamed up to post the two fastest 10,000-meter times in UW history, with Fay finishing three seconds ahead of Lumb. It's the third different school record this season for Fay, the first-year Husky from Dublin.
Fay raced around the track twenty-five times in 28-minutes, 22.31-seconds to break the record held by teammate Tibebu Proctor by nine seconds. Lumb goes to second now with his stellar run of 28:25.93. The times should be among the ten fastest in the NCAA this season when all the action around the country wraps up.
The grad transfer from Ireland, Fay is already a two-time All-American from cross country and indoor track, and he added the 10k record tonight to his indoor 5,000-meter school record and his participation on February's record-setting distance medley relay.
Lumb, a transfer from the University of British Columbia, returned to action in a big way after a health setback kept him out for the rest of the indoor season after he had opened with a 3:55.53 mile time that would have qualified for indoor nationals. Lumb won the NCAA West Regional cross country title in the fall.
Another major mark was put up today by Anna Gibson, coming off her NCAA mile semifinal appearance indoors. Gibson took second overall in the 1,500-meters today in a new PR of 4:13.31, and she goes up to No. 8 in one of the deepest Husky top-10 lists. Freshman Julia David-Smith also had an impressive outdoor debut in the same event, running 4:21.19.
The Husky sprinters also put two new marks onto the top-10 lists. In his first collegiate 100-meters, true freshman Anthony Smith ran the fastest wind-legal time by a Husky since 2013, going 10.47 seconds, which already puts him ninth all-time.
Senior Victoria Gersch ended her indoor season with a big PR in the 400-meters, and she went faster again in her outdoor opener. Gersch clocked a time of 54.66 today, taking the No. 8 spot in school history.
Highlights in the throws came in the discus, where Nolan Such threw a PR on the first attempt of his sophomore season, going 165-0. For the women, Beatrice Asomaning was the top finisher today, taking ninth at 158-2.
In the steeplechase, Joe Waskom and Sam Affolder posted times that would have easily secured NCAA West Prelim spots a year ago. Waskom ran a time of 8:47.93, while Affolder had a huge PR of 14 seconds, as he ran 8:49.54.
Additional Dawgs in the 10k included Tibebu Proctor, who had a great start but couldn't quite finish it off tonight, going 29:47.62. Isaac Mohn ran the first 10k of his career on the track, and ran a time of 29:45.50. In the women's 5k, Camila David-Smith posted a solid outdoor opener of 16:34.84.
The Husky multi-eventers continued to sharpen up in individual events. Ida Eikeng was fifth overall in the open 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.56 seconds, while Hannah Rusnak had her fastest time since 2019 with a 13.91. Eikeng then cleared 5-7 in the high jump, her best mark collegiately. On the men's side, Ollie Thorner had a collegiate-best time of 49.77 seconds in the 400-meters, and Jami Schlueter set a PR of 50.73. In the 110m hurdles, Schlueter crossed in 14.92 and Thorner ran 15.20 wind-aided.
The final day of the Raleigh Relays gets going tomorrow bright and early with the men's hammer throw at 6:45 a.m. Pacific time, with the first running events at 8:45 a.m.
