Washington Sweeps Kansas State 4-0
February 25, 2022 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE -- In their first home match in nearly two weeks, the Washington women's tennis team swept Kansas State 4-0.
"Playing all those matches on the road was great experience, but it was tough," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "I think everybody is just really happy to be home. It was great to be back on our home court, in front of our fans."
The Huskies (8-4) came out strong in doubles, taking the point away from the Wildcats (4-3).
"I thought our doubles point was really good," said Stephenson. "I felt the energy was great."
Vanessa Wong and Hikaru Sato were the first to get it done on court one, winning 6-3. On court three, Sarah-Maude Fortin and her partner Yolanda Lin, followed closely behind, also winning 6-3.
Nika Zupancic and Kelly Leung were on court two, the score was 5-4 when UW clinched the point.
In singles, the Dawgs played consistent and aggressive, putting K-State on their heels.
"In singles, we told the team we needed to have our best competitive performance," said Stephenson. "Not necessarily play our best tennis, but just compete at a high level and I thought we did that one through six."
On court one, Wong won with comfortable margins, 6-2, 6-2, getting a ranked victory over No. 96 Karine-Marion Job.
Hikaru Sato, on court four, finished up next, beating Florentine Dekkers of KSU, 6-3, 6-3.
Kelly Leung clinched it on court five for Dawgs. She won 6-3, 7-5.
"We need to build on today," said Stephenson. "We have to build on our doubles, maintain the same energy. If we are competing at a high level, we are going to give ourselves a good chance."
The Huskies are back tomorrow February 25, facing Boise State at 12 noon in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
