SEATTLE – Coming into the weekend, the Husky track and field team had been methodically chipping away at the record books, with marks that had both squads ranked in the Top-25 nationally this season. But thus far all the school records had remained intact. That changed in a hurry tonight on day one of the Husky Classic, as three school records went down within the span of a couple hours at the Dempsey Indoor.
Â
The first record went down with a thud. Second-year All-American Jayden White shattered his own school record in the weight throw, with a massive toss of the 35-pound ball that touched down 73-feet, 11.75-inches away and set his teammates into a celebration resembling a game-winning buzzer beater inside Alaska Airlines Arena. That broke White's record set in 2021 by over two feet, and moves him up to No. 5 in the NCAA this season.

Later on the track, Washington's women's and men's 5,000-meter records went down in rapid succession. In the women's top heat, senior All-American Haley Herberg added another milestone to her long list of accomplishments, as she fought her way to a 15:39.19 time, just edging out the 2019 record of 15:40.43 set by Husky All-American and 2021 Australian Olympian Izzi Batt-Doyle. It's the first school record for Herberg, who goes to No. 12 in the NCAA this season with the time.

In the men's 5k top heat, Brian Fay continued his sensational first collegiate indoor season as he shattered the UW indoor school record by nine seconds, taking second overall in 13:24.00. That time now ranks as the second-fastest in Dempsey Indoor history, as the top five finishers broke the old facility record. It's also faster than the UW outdoor school record, and ranks as the fifth-fastest in the NCAA this year. Fay, who ran a 3:55.14 mile for the No. 2 time in school history two weeks ago, broke Andrew Jordan's mark of 13:33.61 set at the 2021 NCAA Indoor meet.
