SEATTLE -- The road back to the NCAA tournament was marked by challenges for the Husky volleyball team, but that just means the Dawgs are all the more prepared when the championships begin this Friday, Dec. 2, in Madison, Wisconsin. The Huskies must travel for as long as they can keep winning, with the first round test coming against TCU at 2:30 p.m. Pacific time live on ESPN+
Washington and TCU go at it inside Wisconsin's UW Field House with the winner moving on to round two to face the winner of No. 1-seed Wisconsin against Quinnipiac on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 4 p.m. Pacific. Saturday's winner will reach the Round of 16.
Under a new tournament seeding system, the Huskies were given one of four No. 8 seeds this year. Rather than seeding only the top-16 squads as in past years, this season 32 of the total 64 teams were seeded, with four No. 1-8 seeds, to attempt to create more fairness in early round match-ups.ย
Washington's 21-consecutive NCAA tournaments streak remains fifth nationally, behind Penn State, which has made all 42 championships, Nebraska, which has made all but the first for 41 in a row, then Florida with 32 in a row, and Hawaii with 29 straight, not counting the 2020 season in which UH did not participate. Texas (19) and Kentucky (18) follow behind. In all previous 20 tournaments in the current run, the Huskies have also won their first round match, and UW has reached the Round of 16 the past four seasons, and in nine of the past ten. Washington's most recent Final Four appearance was the 2020-21 spring season, and the Dawgs went all the way and hoisted the trophy back in 2005.
The Dawgs went 20-10 during the regular season and 12-8 in Pac-12 play, finishing fifth in the league, as the conference qualified six teams to the tournament. Four Huskies earned All-Pac-12 honors this week, with seniors Ella May Powell, Claire Hoffman, and Marin Grote all selected to the top team, and sophomore Emoni Bush earning honorable mention. It was the fourth All-Pac-12 honor for Powell, the third for Hoffman, and the second for Grote.
That trio, which has also combined for six All-America honors, has led the Dawgs throughout a fall that has seen a number of injuries befall the UW attackers. Bush, Shannon Crenshaw, and Audra Wilmes have all missed time with injuries, and starting opposite Madi Endsley was lost for the rest of the season back at the end of September. But Hoffman (4.29 kills/set) and Grote (2.55 kills/set) have both put up career-high offensive numbers and Powell's setting has kept the Huskies as one of the most efficient offenses in the country. Washington also remains a tough serving squad as it has long had a reputation for, with a Pac-12-leading 1.70 aces per set.
UW's first round opponent, the Horned Frogs of TCU, are in the tourney for the first time since 2016, and the fourth time ever. TCU went 16-10 on the year and 11-5 in Big 12 play to finish third in the league behind Texas and Baylor. TCU finished on a five-match win streak and upset Baylor during that stretch. Audrey Nalls was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week four times this year and led the conference with 4.39 kills per set in league play. Setter Callie Williams was also named All-Big 12 First Team, averaging 9.28 assists per set for the year. Middle Mykayla Myers posts 0.92 blocks per set and hits .310 on offense. TCU hit .218 for the year and held opponents to a .213 mark. UW and TCU have never faced each other.
