Meek's Brace Leads No. 5 UW to Win Over Grand Canyon
September 03, 2021 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE -- There may not be a hotter player in the country than Lucas Meek. Just five days after racking up four points on a goal and two assists and being named Pac-12 Player of the Week, Meek scored another two goals to lead No. 5 Washington to a 2-0 win over Grand Canyon.
Friday was a rematch of the Round of 32 from the NCAA Tournament in the Spring -- when UW ended the Lopes' season -- and both sides left it all out on the field once again.
The first 45 minutes saw even action, with both teams having several chances, with Washington narrowly out-shooting the opposition 4-0, but neither side was able to find the back of the net.
The second half saw the Huskies outlast GCU and take full control of the match, with UW holding a 12-4 advantage in shots during the last 45 minutes.
Lucas Meek would ultimately provide the breakthrough in the 59th minute. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi launched in a deep throw-in. which Ryan Sailor flicked on at the near post. Meek was waiting in the center of the box to head it past the GCU keeper and give UW the 1-0 lead.
Meek wasn't done, however. In the 83rd minute, the Lopes' keeper tried to play a ball through the middle of the field. Instead, it found the right foot of Meek, who was sitting a few yard in front of midfield. In one motion, Meek launched a shot that settled into the bottom right corner of the empty net.
The Huskies continued to press for the final seven minutes, but ultimately would settle for the 2-0 win over a quality opponent.
Washington is back in action next Friday in its fourth straight home match, this one at 7:00 p.m. against Dartmouth.
