No. 9 Washington Cruises to Win over Cal State Fullerton
August 29, 2021 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE -- After an opening night that took two overtime periods to settle, the Washington men's soccer team made things much easier on itself Sunday afternoon, breezing by Cal State Fullerton by a score of 4-0.
Four different Huskies scored each of the team's 4 goals, with Lucas Meek picking up two assists to give him a four-point afternoon.
Washington controlled the tempo of the match early on, but a breakthrough would not come right away. It took until the 20th minute, when Meek found space down the left side and whipped in a perfect cross to Nick Scardina, who simply had to tap the ball in to put the Huskies up 1-0.
UW continued to put the pressure on and was rewarded again in the 36th minute. This time it was Dylan Teves who did well to get into the box. He found Imanol Rosales, who fired a curling one-timer into the upper corner.
While the Huskies had a healthy 9-3 advantage in shots at halftime, they exerted even more pressure in the second half. UW would outshoot Cal State Fullerton by a margin of 15-2 in the second 45 minutes, giving them an advantage of 24-5 for the match.
The constant pressure paid off in the 80th minute, when Lucas Meek found a loose ball and bombed down the right side with control. As the Fullerton keeper came out, Meek cheekily chipped it in for his first goal of the season.
Just three minutes later, Michael Rojas would slot home a feed from Meek on a breakaway for his first career goal to push it to a 4-0 lead for UW.
With each of their assists, Dylan Teves and Lucas Meek have recorded points in both matches this year. Meek leads the team with five points (1G/3A), while Teves is second with three (1G/1A).
Sunday also marked head coach Jamie Clark's 200th match at Washington. He is one of just two coaches in program history to reach this mark.
Next up for Washington is a home match against Grand Canyon on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.. Fans can purchase tickets here.
