Washington Finishes Four-Game Sweep With 5-1 Win
April 03, 2021 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #6 Washington Huskies completed a four-game sweep of the California Golden Bears with today's 5-1 win. This was Washington's sixth straight win as well as its 12th straight win over Cal. Washington has not lost a home series to Cal since 1998.
Washington scrapped its way onto the scoreboard, scoring via a bases-loaded walk, a bloop double, and a fielding error in the game. The Huskies improve to 28-4 overall with today's win and 6-2 in Pac-12 play with their second series sweep of the season.
Sis Bates, Madison Huskey, and Jadelyn Allchin all had multiple hits, with Washington's 8-9-1 hitters going 6x9 with three runs scored. Bates and Morganne Flores had the only RBI for Washington, with one each. Bates, Allchin, and SilentRain Espinoza all had doubles, the game's only extra-base hits for either team.
The trio of Gabbie Plain, Brooke Nelson, and Sarah Willis combined to hold Cal to just one run in the win. Plain threw 12 first-pitch strikes to the 17 batters she faced, including first-pitch strikes to each of Cal's first six batters. Willis came up big in a dangerous situation, getting a three-pitch strikeout with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to end Cal's best scoring threat after the Golden Bear's only run. The freshman would pick up her second save of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings.
Washington will be back on the road next week, facing off with Oregon State in Corvallis. That series begins Friday, April 9 at 5:00 pm.
