SEATTLE - It's been the longest journey imaginable, but with one road trip and two matches left in the regular season Washington Volleyball has the opportunity to cap off this unprecedented spring campaign with a Pac-12 Championship. To do it the Huskies will need to win twice in Berkeley over the Bears in Haas Pavilion. The first match will be Thursday, Apr. 1, at 6 p.m. and the regular season finale will be Saturday, Apr. 3, at 1 p.m.
California will live stream Saturday's match but Thursday no video coverage will be available.
The seventh-ranked Huskies are coming off two hard-earned wins over Stanford last week to get to 15-3, two wins in front of Oregon which is 13-3 entering its final two matches, and 1.5-games ahead of 13-4 Utah with Washington State still in the mix at 10-3 if the Huskies and Ducks falter. But UW is the team that does not need any help this week as it goes for a sixth Pac-12 title and first since 2016.
Washington is also looking to make a final statement for the NCAA Selection Committee as the Huskies figure to be strong contenders for a top-16 seed in the NCAA tournament and a first round bye given the reduced 48-team field size. The NCAA Selection Show will be this Sunday, Apr. 4, at 1 p.m. Pacific time.
Cal has had a tough season thus far at 1-19 but has had young players showing potential week in and week out. In its last match at Oregon, Bella Bergmark hit .636 with 7 kills and in the previous match, freshman Lydia Grote had 13 kills in just three sets. The series will add a couple sibling rivalries as well, as Grote is the younger sister of Husky junior Marin Grote, and Cal also has junior libero Jessica Houghton, older sister of Husky sophomore Sianna Houghton. Grote leads the Bears overall with 2.77 kills per set, hitting .233 while Bergmark is hitting .318 with 1.40 kills per set. Freshman Katarina Pantovic adds 2.24 kills per set. Senior setter Isabel Potter has 20 aces on the year and 4.84 assists per set as Cal runs a 6-2.
