
Huskies Fall 60-47 To VCU At Goombay Splash In Bahamas

BIMINI, Bahamas – VCU beat Washington 60-47 on Thanksgiving Day in the first game of the Goombay Splash hosted at Gateway Christian Academy on Bimini Island in the Bahamas.
Nancy Mulkey led the Huskies with 13 points. Haley Van Dyke scored 12 and Missy Peterson had 10 to give the Huskies three scorers in double figures.
The Huskies stormed out to an early lead and held a 16-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter before the Rams got hot in the second quarter. VCU outscored UW 17-10 to take a 31-26 edge into the locker room at halftime.
Mulkey had seven first half points along with three blocks. Van Dyke chipped in six points and Peterson added five.
VCU went on an early run in the second half but the Huskies countered to get the score within one point, 39-38, on an Alexis Griggsby three-pointer. The Rams countered with a 7-0 run to end the third quarter and took a 46-38 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Mulkey had six of the Huskies nine fourth-quarter points, but VCU outscored UW 14-9. Mulkey hit a jumper to get the Huskies within four points, 48-44, with five minutes remaining. It would be the closest UW would get, as VCU would close out on a 12-3 run to end the game.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. PT and will face North Carolina in the Bahamas. North Carolina and VCU will play on Friday.
