Lumsden, Chidekh Win Twice At Super Regionals
October 22, 2021 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Husky men's tennis returned to the Nordstrom Tennis Center for the first time in the new academic year today, hosting the ITA Super Regional Championships which will run through Monday. On day one, second-seed Clement Chidekh and seventh-seed Ewen Lumsden both picked up two singles wins to move into the quarterfinals for the Dawgs.
The tourney is comprised of the top players from around the Pacific Northwest and down the West Coast into Northern California with players qualifying in to the tourney through last week's Northwest Regionals at Oregon, or by virtue of a high regional or national ranking.
Chidekh, in his first matches since reaching the semis of the ITA All-American Championships two weeks back, posted a pair of straight-set victories. The All-Pac-12 First Team selection opened with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Stanford's Tomas Kopczynski, and then had a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja. He'll take on Oregon's Quinn Vandecasteele in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Lumsden was down a set and a break in his first round match against Oliver Andersson of Gonzaga, but then caught fire and that carried into his second round. Lumsden came back to beat Andersson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, and then rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jesper Klov-Nilsson of Oregon. Lumsden has top-seed Arthur Fery of Stanford in the quarters at 11:30 tomorrow.
Five more Huskies were in the field of 32 in singles, but were unable to move on, and will compete in the consolation draw starting Saturday. Jack Davis had a 7-5, 7-5 loss to James Watt of Saint Mary's, while Jack Pulliam dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to No. 3-seed and 100th-ranked Alexandre Rotsaert of Stanford. Han-Chih Lin played well but fell to 8th-seeded Vandecasteele, 6-4, 7-5, while Adam Torocsik faced the top-seeded Fery and lost, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Nedim Suko made his NTC debut but dropped a 6-1, 6-4 match to Max Basing of Stanford.
In the doubles bracket, UW came away with two wins and a loss. The UW pair of Jack Davis and Brandon Wong defeated University of San Fransico duo Phuc Huynh and Nitzan Ricklis 8-5. The Huskies took an early lead and were able to keep the momentum to secure the win.
Chidekh and Suko for the Dawgs faced off against Oscar Brown and Nicklas Oberg of University of Portland. The Huskies won 8-7, after allowing UP to crawl back despite a strong 6-1 start. In the tie-breaker, UW served tough and minimized their own errors which lead to the win over the Pilots. The tie-breaker score was 8-6 in favor of the Dawgs.
The final doubles match-up was Lumsden and Han-Chih Lin for the Huskies who took on Fery and Rotsaert for Stanford. The final score there, Huskies fell 4-8. It was back-and-forth for most of the match until the Cardinals were able to pull away and get the victory over the Dawgs.
Tomorrow, tournament play continues with more single and doubles match-ups.
