Playing With Nine Men, No. 1 Huskies Fall To No. 8 OSU On Late PK
October 22, 2021 | Men's Soccer
The Beavers, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA RPI, just behind No. 1 UW, brought the energy to Seattle and struck first within 10 minutes to take a 1-0 lead.Β
However, the Huskies continued their set piece brilliance to equalize later in the half. A long ball sent in by Charlie Ostrem found the head of Ryan Sailor, who scored his 4th goal of the season to tie the team lead.Β

The teams would settle into the match for the next 15 minutes or so. In the 44th minute, the Beavers found themselves on a breakaway and on that play, Achille Robin committed a foul inside the box and was shown a straight red card. On the ensuing penalty, Sofiane Djeffal of OSU hit it off the crossbar, and while the rebound was headed in, it was done so by Djeffal with no other touches, resulting in an offsides call. The two teams would head to the locker room tied at 1-1.Β
The tensity picked up in the 53rd minute, when Nicklas Lund was shown a yellow for shoving Khai Brisco late out of bounds in front of the Husky bench. Just three minutes later, however, the shorthanded UW squad would find a way to put itself in front. Brisco helped win a loose ball and got it to Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, who then found a cutting Nick Scardina. With a tidy far-post finish into the lower-left corner, Scardina put the Huskies up 2-1 on his 4th goal of the season.Β

Less than 10 minutes after the go-ahead goal, the match was flipped on its head. After being taken out on a late challenge by OSU, Christian Soto was shown a straight red card by the referee, forcing Washington to finish the last 28 minutes of the matchΒ with nine players to the 11 of the Beavers.Β
OSU would make the most of its two-man advantage, equalizing in the 74th minute off the left foot of Joran Gerbet.Β
The Beavers would be able to find more opportunities late in the game and were ultimately awarded another penalty kick in the 88th minute. Mouhameth Thiam slotted it home in the lower-left corner for what would wind up being theΒ game-winning goal.
Friday night marked the first loss of the season for the Huskies and they move to 12-1 (4-1 Pac-12),
