Jack Davis Earns Pair of ITA Regional Awards
May 18, 2020 | Men's Tennis
Washington junior Jack Davis has earned a pair of prestigious honors as he was named the 2020 Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship and 2020 ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award recipient for the Northwest Region, announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Monday.
"The players who these awards are named after have done incredible things for our sport and community, so to be mentioned under their names is an amazing honor for me," said Davis. "Leadership and sportsmanship are key values for our team and to our university, and I feel that being recognized for these traits is a great reflection of the fantastic support system that student-athletes at the UW are exposed to."
"First of all, I am proud of Jack," said University of Washington men's tennis Head Coach Matt Anger. "He has worked at improving these qualities and it is always a great feeling to see those efforts rewarded. Knowing Jack, he will only work to improve even more."
Davis--a team co-captain--had a breakout season in 2019-20, posting a 9-2 record at No. 1 singles and went 15-5 overall as a junior. He was ranked as high No. 43 in the ITA national singles rankings and posted a 6-1 record at No. 1 doubles while paired with Alexis Alvarez.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
The ITA/Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award is the ITA's longest-running award and goes to a Division I men's player who displays sportsmanship, character, excellent academics and has had outstanding tennis playing accomplishments. The award was established in 1969 in memory of Rafael Osuna, who was killed in a plane accident at the age of 30. Osuna is one of the all-time great collegiate tennis players, winning three NCAA doubles titles (1961-63) and the 1962 NCAA singles title.
Davis becomes the first Husky to earn the Rafael Osuna Award since Alex Vlaski in 2004 and the first to earn the Ashe Award since Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in 2011.
