Huskies in Fifth Place After Two Rounds at Juli Inkster Invitational
March 09, 2020 | Women's Golf
FAIRFAX, Calif. – Washington finished the first two rounds on day one of the tournament 13-over 589 (290-299). The Huskies came out of the gates strong in round one but struggled to finish off round two in the afternoon.
"It was a frustrating day," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We just really imploded over the last few holes of the second round."
Rino Sasaki sits atop the rankings for the Huskies in a tie for 17th place at 4-over 148 (74-74). The junior was consistent all over the first day, firing in five birdies over the two rounds. Sasaki sat at one under on her way to the front nine, but couldn't maintain her success, scoring a bogey and a double-bogey on two of the last three holes.
"We had a few players go plus four or five in a five-hole stretch," said Mulflur. "We need to focus on sustaining our play from the beginning of the round through the last hole."
Brittany Kwon finished the second round at 2-over 74, tying Martha Lewis and Rino Sasaki for the best second round score for Washington. Kwon was unable to finish the first round, however, due to a neck injury.
"I'm really proud of Brittany," said Mulflur. "We decided to pull her out with about a hole to go in the first round to hopefully get her good to go for this afternoon, and I'm glad she was able play for us in the second round."
Martha Lewis finished the day one place behind Sasaki in a tie for 20th, and a score of 5-over 149 (75-74). Lewis started her second round with three birdies in a row and added three more after she made the turn onto the back nine. Unfortunately, the sophomore couldn't maintain her momentum as she finished the round with three bogeys and a double bogey over the final six holes.
Alice Duan started strong in the first round, firing in five birdies to only one bogey. The senior couldn't find the same success in the afternoon, however. After finishing the first round at 4-under 68, Duan ended the day at 7-over 151 (68-83).
"Alice had a great morning," said Mulflur. "Unfortunately she couldn't sustain it this afternoon."
Karen Miyamoto finished the day in a tie for 23rd at 6-over 150 (73-77). Like her teammates, the senior found success in her first round, but couldn't replicate it in the afternoon.
"We're going to have to play well tomorrow," said Mulflur. "We're going to talk to them about finishing, bounce back quick, and be tougher throughout the entire round."
