SEATTLE β Thirteen Huskies have arrived in Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete with the nation's best at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The top sixteen individuals in every event and top-12 relays bring the indoor season to a close this Friday and Saturday, March 13-14 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Β
The eighth-ranked Washington women's team has seven entries, tied with the 2005 squad for most in school history. The seven entries are also ninth-most in the NCAA, tied with Florida. The men's squad has four individual entries, all four of which are seniors.
Β
ESPN3 will stream the championships live starting at 4:15 p.m. Pacific time March 13 and starting at 3 p.m. Pacific time March 14. A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 6 p.m. Pacific time Monday, March 16 on ESPNU. As usual, team points will be awarded to the top-eight finishers in every event, on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.
Β
Assessing the women's team, "The goal is just to score as many points as we can," said Director of Track & Field Maurica Powell. "We need to lean on our upperclassmen because they're experienced competitors at this level, and then hope our freshmen can be clutch."
Β
Men's Head Coach Andy Powell is looking forward to seeing what his seniors can get done in their final indoor championships.
Β
"All four guys are healthy and in their best physical shape going into nationals so that's all you really want is for them to feel good and have a shot at reaching their potential," Powell says. "They all have nothing to lose, all four of them, not being the highest ranked but being seniors and being in the best shape at this time of year, they can just go for it which is a cool way to go into it."
Β
The first athlete up on Friday will be junior Hannah Rusnak. The Pac-12 outdoor heptathlon champion who took ninth in the NCAA Outdoor heptathlon last spring now makes her NCAA Indoor debut in the pentathlon. She won the MPSF title with a school record score of 4,190 points that ranks sixth in the field coming in. Rusnak kicks things off at 10:15 a.m. Pacific time in the 60-meter hurdles and she will wrap up the pentathlon with the 800m run at 4:15 pm.
Β
Senior Chase Smith makes his third trip to NCAA Indoors in the men's pole vault, which starts at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. Smith has a season-best make of 17-11 that ranks him 13th coming in. He previously tied for 11th at the 2017 indoor meet, and tied for 10th in 2018.
Β
Senior Mick Stanovsek is set for a fourth career NCAA Indoor run. Stanovsek went to No. 2 in school history in the mile this season with his qualifying time of 3:57.88, which ranks 10th coming in. Stanovsek was 11th in the mile at indoors last year and then was 10th in the 1,500-meter final at NCAA Outdoors.
Β
Freshman Carley Thomas makes her NCAA Championships debut on Friday in the 800-meter prelims at 6:10 p.m. The native Australian broke the UW indoor school record this year by nearly three full seconds, and ranks second in the NCAA with a best of 2:02.75.
Β
Senior Tanner Anderson will make his second appearance at NCAA Indoors in the 5,000-meters. He opened his indoor season back in December with a time of 13:40.42 that held up as the No. 15 qualifying time. That is also the second-best mark in UW history. Anderson then showed strong form with a victory in the MPSF Championships at 3,000-meters with a PR of 7:58.34. Anderson will race at 6:20 p.m. Friday.
Β
The final event Friday evening will be the women's DMR, where the Huskies go into a loaded field ranked No. 3. The squad of Allie Schadler, Olivia Ribera, Carley Thomas and Katie Rainsberger ran 10:56.23 at the UW Invitational to make the field for the second year in a row. Schadler also led off the DMR at NCAAs last year when the Huskies took seventh, but the next three legs will be different than a year ago. Freshman Marlena Preigh will also make the trip as the relay alternate.
Β
On Saturday, Olivia Gruver will compete as a Husky for the final time in what has been an historic 12-month stretch for the transfer from Kentucky. Gruver, the top seed in the women's pole vault with her clearance of 15-5, will be aiming for a third career NCAA title, but a first indoors. While at Kentucky, Gruver took third at the 2017 NCAA Indoors and third at the 2018 NCAA Indoors. Her 15-5 clearance, the No. 2 mark in NCAA indoor history, came at the same facility where she will jump on Saturday.
Β
Should they advance, the final for Stanovsek in the mile will be at 3:10 on Saturday and the 800m final for Thomas will be at 4:40 p.m.
Β
Jack Rowe caps off a stellar indoor season with his first appearance at indoor nationals on Saturday in the men's 3,000-meter final, set for 5:10 p.m. Rowe posted the third-fastest time in school history of 7:51.00 and that held up for the 16th and final time into the meet. Rowe lowered his 3k PR by over seven seconds in his first season running for Andy Powell.
Β
Last but in fact most, the Huskies have three entries in the women's 3,000-meter field. Rainsberger and Schadler will double back from running the DMR on Friday and will be joined by freshman Mel Smart. This is Rainsberger's third NCAA Indoor meet; she only missed in 2018 due to injury. The nine-time All-American ranks sixth in the field with her PR of 8:56.24, second-fastest in school history. Schadler makes her first individual NCAA Indoor field after going to No. 3 in school history with her 9:00.89 time, while Smart qualified 13th overall with her best of 9:06.52, the sixth-fastest time in school history.
