Huskies Strike Late, Win 3-1 Over #4 LSU
February 28, 2020 | Softball
FULLERTON, Ca. – The #2 Washington Huskies won a tight one 3-1 over the #4 LSU Tigers to start the Judi Garman Classic. The game was scoreless through four innings, with the Huskies eventually taking advantage of LSU fielding miscues to jump-start the offense. Washington moves to 16-1 with the win, its third over a top-five team this season.
Neither team put a runner in scoring position until the fifth inning and only six balls reached the outfield in that time. Washington had the game's only hits through four innings, both on infield singles.
That late-game Husky offense reared its head once again, with Washington scoring three times in the sixth to take the lead for good. Washington has now outscored the opposition 56-7 in the sixth inning or later on the season. The Huskies put six runners on base in the game's final two innings after putting just five on in the first five.
Despite nine illegal pitches erasing five outs, Kelley Lynch carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before LSU managed a single. Lynch only allowed one runner to reach scoring position in her 4.2 innings. Unfortunately, back-to-back hits in the fifth gave LSU a run before Pat Moore and Gabbie Plain took over.
Moore and Plain allowed only one baserunner in the game's final two innings, a comeback single in the fifth. The duo struck out four of the eight batters they faced, with Moore earning the win and Plain the save.
Washington takes on Fresno State tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
