January 27, 2020 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE - Washington earned a big win over number 10 California with plenty of career performances. Evanni Roberson, Kristyn Hoffa, and Hannah Vandenkolk each had career-high scores, while Allie Smith, Geneva Thompson, Brenna Brooks, and Maya Washington matched career-high scores. The team's score of 197.225 is tied for the eighth-best score in Washington gymnastics history.
"I am incredibly proud of how the team did last night," said head coach Elise Ray-Statz. "They were poised, focused, and expected greatness out of themselves from warm ups all the way through the last routine on floor."
The GymDawgs were on point from the beginning, earning their best vault score of the season. Geneva Thompson and Allie Smith led the way for Washington, scoring a 9.900 and 9.875 respectively. Both scores matched a career-high for the two gymnasts.
Washington improved on their vault score when they took the bars, grabbing a 49.225, a season-high bars score. Four GymDawgs scored 9.800 or higher as Madison Copiak led the way with a 9.925. The senior's score was good for the individual event title as well.
"This is the team I have been seeing in the gym so to see it show up in competition in our third meet of the season is very exciting," said Ray-Statz. "This is the earliest we've ever reached a score of 197!"
The GymDawgs continued to improve as they moved onto beam with a 49.350, and another season-high team score on beam. Evanni Roberson grabbed a 9.950 and the individual title while matching a career-high. A total of five GymDawgs earned scores over 9.800, including Hannah Vandenkolk who snagged a career-high 9.825.
Washington had their most successful event of the meet on floor. The 49.475 rotation score was the highest floor score the GymDawgs had earned in two years. Kristyn Hoffa earned a career-high 9.975, also the highest score by a GymDawg on floor since March of 2004 when Emily Pritchard scored a 10.000.
