January 21, 2020 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE - Washington kicked off the 2020 season at home in style on Monday as they competed against #22 Boise State. The GymDawgs found their stride once again on vault, bars, and floor which was enough to power the team to a score of 196.275, good for a win over Boise State and their score of 193.975.
"Our first meet at home this season was just ok," said head coach Elise Ray-Statz. "Overall, I would've liked a stronger performance on all four events." The GymDawgs hit their stride in the final rotation, scoring 49.425 on floor and three gymnasts earning a tie for first place with scores of 9.925.
"There were certainly highlights like Amara's two career high scores!" said Ray-Statz. "She was the leader of the team last night, showing a level of performance that we want out of everyone. I couldn't be more excited for her!" Amara Cunningham set the tone early for Washington with a career-high vault score of 9.875 and the individual title. The sophomore finished her day with another career-high performance, this time on floor. She grabbed the individual title and a score of 9.925 during the final rotation. Her individual titles on vault and floor were the first title wins of her career.
Evanni Roberson continued her dominance in the all around for Washington, earning her second all around title in as many meets. She also finished with a career-high on floor, earning a 9.925 good for the individual title, along with Cunningham and Maya Washington.
Washington was the third GymDawg to earn a 9.925 on floor and grab an individual title. Earlier in the meet, she earned a 9.875 on bars, the highest score for the GymDawgs during the rotation.
"Going into Cal, I expect to see that level of excellence throughout the whole meet," said Ray-Statz. "I am seeing great things in the gym each week. It's time to show it when it counts."
